Meet our 2015 award recipients who are changing the world.

Royal Neighbors, one of the largest women-led life insurers in the U. S., awarded 10 Nation of Neighbors grants in 2015 to 10 women dedicated to helping others. Since 2007 Royal Neighbors has awarded more than $1.7 million. If you know someone who has a plan to start or expand a business or an organization/group that helps women and girls in their community, submit a nomination today. Nominations are accepted between March 1 and June 15.

A Home to Get Help and Heal

Minta Moore wants to provide a home-like setting where underage survivors of sex trafficking can live, get help, and heal from their traumatic experiences. With her grant she is able to break ground for the New Life Refuge Home of Hope.

Helping Cancer Patients

Royal Neighbors and Women With Purpose joined forces to help women with cancer. Jane Morse-Swett of Clearwater, Florida, founder of Women With Purpose, received the award so she could continue her program to help cancer patients with non-medical financial assistance.

Providing a Safe Haven for Domestic Violence Victims

Deborah Logan from San Leandro has a dream to start a non-profit and provide a safe and nurturing environment where domestic violence victims can receive support and feel empowered enough to leave their abusive environments. Thanks to her Nation of Neighbors’ grant she will be able to launch her non-profit, “Pathways,” and continue her work to help women and their children trapped in domestic violence situations.

Empowering Families

Loredia Nunn-Dixon received a bountiful surprise when she was awarded an unexpected grant from Royal Neighbors. She will use the funds to expand a community-wide movement that brings volunteer community members (“navigators”) together to help people in poverty (“neighbors”) in the Quad Cities area in Illinois.

Helping a Community Garden Flourish

Sonya (Frankie) Young understood the importance of good nutrition and community involvement when she helped establish the community garden, Produce to the People! Now she has the funds that will allow the community garden to continue operating, as well as outreach initiatives of health and wellness in the community of Walnut Hills, Ohio.

Giving Women a Second Chance

Perry, Utah resident Taumi Rae Donovan’s grant will provide former female inmates with a second chance. Donovan will use the funds to create a business to provide employment for former inmates (particularly single mothers) so they can work and care for their families without going on public assistance.

Sisters Empowering Sisters

Angela Benefield-McNair’s youth mentorship program, Sisters Empowering Sisters (SES), will have a meeting place and new computers for a technology center thanks to the Nation of NeighborsSM  grant they received from Royal Neighbors of America. NoN1

Educating Teens about Dating Violence Prevention

Kristy Knapp, a Prevention Specialist for the Crisis Center & Women’s Shelter in Ottumwa, Iowa was presented a $10,000 check so she could expand her outreach to help educate young teens about dating violence prevention.

Empowering and Educating Women in the Bay Area

Bernice Bates has spent most of her life giving back to others. Now thanks to her Nation of Neighbors grant she can do more to help underserved and low-income women in the Bay Area become educated, independent, economically empowered, self-confident and self-sufficient through expanded services at the Metropolitan Life Center.

Making a Global Impact to Prevent Violence Against Women

Lisa Shannon, an internationally known women’s advocate and author from Portland, OR will use her grant to create a UN Treaty to reduce violence against women and girls.

Program Guidelines:
  • Nominations will be accepted only from members of Royal Neighbors. (Only 5 nominations per member will be accepted.)
  • Self-nominations are accepted.
  • Funds received through this program must be used for the purpose for which the funds were awarded.
  • Nominator and nominee must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Information provided must be thorough, accurate, and complete. Incomplete information will not be accepted.
  • Recipients are responsible for any public aid or tax implications.
  • Previous recipients are not eligible.
  • Employees of Royal Neighbors are not eligible to receive funds through the program.
  • Nomination deadline for our 2016 program is June 15, 2016.
  • The program can be modified or discontinued at any time.
  • All decisions are final and are at the discretion of the selection committee.

Q: What is Nation of Neighbors?
A: Nation of Neighbors is a program that demonstrates our commitment to empowering women. Through nominations from our members (including our agents), Nation of Neighbors provides financial support to empower women of strength and courage achieve their full potential, realize a sense of renewed personal growth, and make a difference in their communities.

Q: What are the eligibility requirements to nominate?
A: Members have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of women by submitting a nomination for the Nation of Neighbors Program. Nominations must make a long-term impact on a woman's life. You do not have to be a member to receive an award, but you must be a member to nominate. Previous recipients are not eligible. Nominator and Nominee must be 18 years old or older.

Q: Why is Royal Neighbors giving away money?
A: Royal Neighbors established the Nation of Neighbors Program as a tangible expression of our neighbor-helping-neighbor philosophy. This program is a vehicle through which Royal Neighbors can support, encourage, and give back to the community. Since 2007, Nation of Neighbors has changed the lives of more than 1,200 individuals and families.

Q: How much money can each recipient receive? 
A: In 2016, grants will be for $10,000 each. Recipients are selected by a panel of reviewers. All decisions are final and are the discretion of the panel.

Q: Does the nominee need to be female?
A: No. You may nominate anyone (including yourself) who, with financial assistance through the program, will empower a woman or women to achieve her full potential, realize a sense of renewed personal growth, and make a difference in her community.
