Company Created to Combat Food Deserts Using Hydroponics

(Rock Island, IL, January 31, 2018) – Nadia Ruffin of Cincinnati, Ohio, was presented the 2017 Know Your Worth® grant of $10,000 from the Royal Neighbors Foundation to help grow her business, Quiwi Produce.

Nadia founded the company to combat food deserts in the Cincinnati area. Residents’ interest in growing their own food and the lack of easy access to grocery stores in many neighborhoods was the impetus for starting her own business. In addition to growing food for the community using hydroponics, she offers classes and workshops on organic urban farming, gardening, chicken raising, beekeeping, mushroom production, hydroponics and food safety.

Nadia is an Ohio State graduate with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture. She earned a master’s of science degree in entomology from the University of Nebraska.

“This grant will definitely help me expand my business and outreach,” said Nadia. “Many people don’t know how to grow their own food, but with hydroponics, you can grow foods like tomatoes, lettuce and peppers right in your own home. Depending on the space you have, the sky’s the limit.”

The Know Your Worth Program is designed to empower women to continue to build on their financial value as they expand an existing small business or create a start-up with less than five employees. Applicants’ access to traditional sources of capital and lending must be limited or non-existent. Recipients then pay it forward by sharing the lessons they learn with future grant recipients. The application period is September 1-November 30, and the program is open to the public.
