Royal Neighbors board and executives get ‘down and dirty’ to plant, trim, and paint to help women

(Rock Island, IL) – You don’t often see busy executives spending a Sunday afternoon getting their hands dirty in someone else’s garden. But members of the Royal Neighbors of America board of directors and executive team will be doing exactly that at 1920 and 1924 9th Avenue, Rock Island on Sunday, May 15, from 3-5 p.m. The vacant lots were a gift to the St. Joseph House Association from a local couple with the stipulation that they be used as a garden or a park. The Royal Neighbors volunteers will be landscaping, planting a vegetable and herb garden, re-mulching a playground, planting container gardens, and painting benches. Residents of St. Joseph the Worker House in Rock Island, a home for women in transition, will be the recipients of the garden’s produce.
In the event of rain, the group will plant vegetables in container gardens at the Royal Neighbors Home Office at 230 16th Street, Rock Island.
“We’re pleased to volunteer on behalf of Royal Neighbors for a project that aligns so well with our 116-year mission of empowering women,” said Cynthia Tidwell, Royal Neighbors President/CEO. “The vegetable garden will provide food for the families who reside temporarily at St. Joseph the Worker House. By helping these women in transition learn about gardening and growing their own food, we’re giving them yet another avenue to make their lives better.”
Employees of Royal Neighbors’ Home Office and local chapter members supported JOIN HANDS DAY on May 7 by volunteering for a variety of garden projects. The theme “Growing and Giving TogetherSM” focuses on giving women the tools they need to put healthy food on the table for their families in a cost-effective manner.
