100 Royal Neighbors volunteers will plant gardens to raise food for 150 families

(Rock Island, IL) –Over 100 volunteers from the Royal Neighbors of America Home Office and area chapters will observe JOIN HANDS DAY on Saturday, May 7, by “Growing & Giving TogetherSM.” The group will join with individuals from local service organizations to plant vegetable gardens throughout the Quad Cities to help teach women to grow healthy, affordable food for their families. Master gardeners will be on site to teach participants how to plant and maintain the gardens. It is estimated that when harvested, the food will feed 150 women and their families.

 

Make-and-Take Container Gardens for women in transitional housing

Time: noon-1:30 p.m.

Location: YWCA, 229 16th Street, Rock Island

 

Community Resettlement Garden for refugees and immigrants

Time: 10-11:30 a.m.

Location: 19th Street and 8 ½ Avenue, Rock Island

 

Fejervary Park Children’s Garden (formerly the children’s zoo)

Time: 10-11:30 a.m.

Location: 1780 West 12 Street, Davenport

In the event of inclement weather, all community and raised gardens will be planted in early June; the make-and-take container garden event will go on as scheduled.
