Salem, OR, members help give newborns
a great start

Since 1969, members of the Salem, OR, chapter have looked after the newborn infants in their community.

When she began working for the Marion County Health Department, Bessie Deneke, chapter secretary-treasurer, noticed that many newborns were in need of items to keep them comfortable. So she and her fellow members began purchasing yarn and started creating afghans, booties, caps, and sweaters. They assemble these beautiful items, along with formula, and distribute them to parents in need through local medical facilities. “We donated 57 layettes last year alone, all of which included a tag identifying them as a donation from Royal Neighbors, Salem chapter,” said Bessie.

“Our surrounding communities know all about Royal Neighbors,” she said. “They know how much we help and we have been recognized by many local organizations for our work.” The members help fund their projects by collecting food labels which they return for money.

They also visit nursing homes in the area. “Everyone is happy to see us,” said Bessie. “Residents, their families, and the employees always have a smile for us.”

Another worthy cause supported by this active group is the Union Gospel Mission of Salem. Members assemble personal hygiene kits and donate them to the mission. Shown in the picture are Bessie, at right, and Beverly Gatchet, chapter president.

Bessie noted that many people in Salem are willing to give of their time. “We’re all very community-minded here. Volunteerism is important. When we meet new people, we invite them to our Royal Neighbors events, explain our projects, and say ‘Look at what we’ve done. Maybe you’d like to join us and make a difference’.”

And, they usually do!
