Medicare is a health insurance program operated by the federal government. Benefits are available to qualifying individuals age 65 or older, certain disabled individuals under age 65, and those suffering from end-stage renal disease.

 

A Medicare Supplement Insurance plan (also called Medigap) is a health insurance policy sold by private insurance companies to fill the “gaps” in the Original Medicare plan. Medicare Supplement Insurance plans help you pay some of the health care costs that the original Medicare plan doesn’t cover.

 

 

Medicare Part A covers Hospital insurance. Most people do not have to pay for Part A because they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.

 

Medicare Part B covers Medical insurance. Part B is optional. You have your choice of doctors. Your costs may be higher than in Medicare Advantage Plans.

 

Medicare Part C is known as Medicare Advantage Plans. This is a plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare to provide you with all your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits. Medicare Advantage Plans are HMOs, PPOs, or Private Fee-for-Service Plans. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, Medicare services are covered through the plans, and are not paid for under Original Medicare

 

Medicare Part D covers prescription drugs. Most Part C plans cover prescription drugs. If they don’t, you may be able to choose this coverage. Plans cover different drugs. Medically necessary drugs must be covered.
