(Rock Island, IL) –Royal Neighbors of America, headquartered in Rock Island, was chosen to receive a $10,000 grant from Paul Newman and Newman’s Own Foundation, Inc., in honor of its efforts on Make A Difference Day.  Make A Difference Day is a national day of volunteering sponsored annually by USA WEEKEND magazine and the Points of Light Foundation. Royal Neighbors will be recognized in the Sunday, April 27, issue of USA WEEKEND magazine, along with nine other winners.

USA WEEKEND will host an awards presentation ceremony at the Royal Neighbors Home Office, 230 16th Street, Rock Island, on April 23, 2008 from 2:00-3:30 p.m.

As its Make A Difference Day project, local Royal Neighbors chapter members renovated the outside of St. Joseph the Worker House, Rock Island, a home for women and their families in transition. The group painted, landscaped, and built a play area and gate.

“This award is a great honor and the volunteers’ efforts are a testament to our commitment to neighbor-helping-neighbor,” said Cynthia Tidwell, Royal Neighbors President/CEO. “The project aligned perfectly with our mission of changing women’s lives one by one. We’re very pleased we can make an even bigger impact on St. Joseph House with this award.”

Sister Bobbi Bussan, board Chairperson of St. Joseph House, said, “I was thrilled when Judith Tshibangu from Royal Neighbors came to us with the idea of helping to improve the house. The children now have a safe place to play together and the families feel they are part of a true neighborhood. We were blessed when we were ‘adopted’ by Royal Neighbors.”
