Royal Neighbors of America is playing Santa by rescuing the traditional holiday Tour of Lights for residents of three senior centers in Rock Island. The locally based organization has donated funds to the Rock Island Police Department for two chartered buses to give more than 150 seniors the opportunity to enjoy the holiday lights.
The tours, which will last for 1 ½ hours, will visit neighborhoods from 30th Street in Rock Island to Archer Drive in East Moline. They will be as follows:
- Tuesday, December 18, 6 p.m., for residents of Coventry Apartments, 1900 6th Avenue, Rock Island;
- Wednesday, December 19, 6 p.m., for residents of Friendship Manor, 1209 21st Avenue, Rock Island; and
- Thursday, December 20, 6:30 p.m., for residents of the Fort Armstrong Senior Residence, 1900 3rd Avenue, Rock Island
The holiday event, which has been a 13-year tradition, was due to be cancelled because of new federal guidelines until Royal Neighbors stepped up to fund the event.
